Story of Gideon For Kids

When we pray to God and love him, he blesses us and gives us his love too. If we make a mistake and apologize to him from the heart, he surely forgives us. Because he is kind. But what if we don’t pray to God and don’t love him? What if we do not even apologize to God for our mistakes? In such a situation, God will surely be angry with us and will punish us if needed. In this story, we will be able to know all these things very well. So let’s know what happens in this story of Gideon for kids.

God’s Displeasure

This is the story of the time when the people of Israel used to worship someone else instead of praying to their God, Yahowah. God saved Israel from many troubles. He created a new nation through Abraham and his children. God showed the way to a great king like David.

He led the prophets Noah, Moses, Elijah, Jonah, etc. But despite doing all this. People would have prayed to false God instead of praying to the real God of Israel. In such a situation, God thought of punishing the people of Israel.

One day the army of Midian attacks Israel. After this, Israel is taken possession of Midian. This was the punishment of God which God gave to the people of Israel.
After the capture of Midian, the people of Israel had nothing left. Their entire field was destroyed. Their house was destroyed. In frustration, the people of Israel prayed to the true God Yahowah.

As we have read earlier, God is merciful, if we pray with him sincerely, he surely forgives us. This time too, he forgave Israel’s people and Gideon’s story begins from here.

Angel and Gideon

Gideon was a resident of Israel but hid after Midian attacked. Gideon was hiding in a place from where no one can see him even Midianites. One day while Gideon was separating the straw from the grains of wheat, an angel came to him in disguise as a man.

Seeing the man, Gideon asked him, “Who are you? I never saw you.”
“I have come from God,” said Angel, “I have brought his message here for you.”

Upon hearing that Angel, Gideon started laughing and said, “Oh well, don’t you have any other work. Go do your work and don’t bother me.”

“Don’t waste your time here like that,” the angel said, “God is with you. Go and liberate Israel. You become a warrior and exert your full strength.”

Gideon first refuses to accept all these things but later started giving excuses. He tells the angel, “If this is the case then why doesn’t God show his miracle? If you can show me any sign then only I will believe that it is the message of God.”

If we too were Gideon’s place, we would have done similar questions. First of all, we thought that why God has chosen me? The same question must have arisen in Gideon’s mind, which is why he was making so many excuses.

After that, the angel asked Gideon to build an altar and offered God to him. (Such an altar was also built by Cain and Able when they were about to offer to God. Other than that, Elijah also built a similar altar to prove Baal priests wrong.)

Gideon did as he was told. He built an altar and offered it in it. After some time fire came out of that altar and accepted that offering. Gideon stared at it and now he was convinced that the man was an angel. That angel brought the message of God.

Gideon’s Army

God then told Gideon, “You will need an army to fight Midian’s army. Go and build an army of your own.”

Gideon did what God told him. Gideon told all the Israelis that he was forming an army to fight Midian’s army and that anyone could join the army. In such a situation, Gideon formed an army of 32000 (thirty-two thousand) people.

God’s plan was something else. He asked Gideon to decrease the number of people in the army. The reason for doing this was that if Gideon went to fight with an army of 32000 people. So the people of Israel believe that they have won this battle themselves. In such a situation, they do not believe in God and do not believe that God has helped them in winning the war.

After the army was ready, God said to Gideon, “Gideon, your army is very large. Reduce the people from your army and remove them.”

“But God,” Gideon said, “their number is still higher than us. If I remove more people from the army, how will we fight them?”

“Don’t bother. Don’t forget that I’m with you.” God told Gideon.
According to the orders of God, Gideon went to his army and told the people that whoever is afraid can go back home. After saying this, something happened that Gideon could not think of. 22000 (twenty-two thousand) of the army went back home. Now there were just 10000 (ten thousand) people left in the army.

Gideon and 300 soldiers

After reducing the army, God again came to him and said, “Gideon, your army is still large, reduce your people.”

Gideon became more upset and wondered how he would fight the war with such a small army. God said to him, “Take your army to drink water. Keep an eye on everyone and observe them while they are drinking water. You have to keep in mind who is bowing down like a dog and drinking water. Who else is holding water in his hand and drinking water by looking around.”

“What will happen if I do this?” Gideon asked the question.

“Don’t you worry I’m with you,” God said, “You exclude those from the army who drink water like dogs?” After this, Gideon began to monitor everyone. According to God, Gideon separated the people. Now there were just 300 people left. Just 300 people!

Now Gideon became more worried because how will he fight a war with an army of 300 people? He asked God again, “O God, how shall I fight with such a small army. I am afraid that we will lose the war. “

God convinces Gideon and tells him what to do next? God told him,” Give trumpet and glass jar with a torch inside it. And take everyone to the top of the mountain where Midian’s army is.” Gideon did what God told him to do.

Winning Without Fight

Gideon trumpeted his army men and gave them glass jar with a torch inside it. When they reached the top of the mountain, they loudly rang the trumpet and then immediately throw the glass jar. They all said in a loud voice, “In the name of God and in the name of Gideon.” Saying this, they repeatedly rang the trumpet and then immediately throw the glass jar. The people shouted together again, “A sword for God and for Gideon.”

Hearing all this, the army of Midian felt that Gideon was bringing a large army to them. Midian’s army was frightened by it and fled from the place where their camp was situated. In this way, the people of Israel were freed again, in which God supported Gideon and the people of Israel.
